North Carolina Tax Deadlines: Individual & Corporate Filing Guide

North Carolina Tax Deadlines: Individual & Corporate Filing Guide

North Carolina’s headline trap is its pass-through deadline: unlike the federal March date, North Carolina S-corporation and partnership returns are due in April. The state is also phasing both its individual and corporate rates downward, so the numbers move every year.

North Carolina Tax Deadlines at a Glance (2026)

Entity Type

Return Due

Extended Due Date

Individuals (D-400)

April 15, 2026

October 15, 2026

C Corporations (CD-405)

April 15, 2026

November 16, 2026 (7-month)

S Corporations (CD-401S)

April 15, 2026

November 16, 2026 (7-month)

Partnerships (D-403)

April 15, 2026

October 15, 2026 (6-month)

The key correction: CD-401S and D-403 are due April 15, 2026 — the 15th day of the 4th month — not the federal March 16. And North Carolina grants corporations (C and S) a 7-month extension to November 16, while partnerships get a 6-month extension to October 15. Filing on the federal March schedule is a common and avoidable error here.

Rates Are Phasing Down

North Carolina’s flat individual income tax rate is 4.25% for the 2025 tax year (filed in 2026), dropping to 3.99% for 2026. The corporate income tax rate is 2.25% for 2025 and 2.00% for 2026, on a statutory glide path to 0% by 2030. Pass-through income is taxed to owners at the individual rate.

Franchise Tax and the Taxed PTE Election

C corporations also owe a separate franchise tax: $1.50 per $1,000 of the tax base, capped at $500 on the first $1 million, with a $200 minimum. North Carolina offers an elective “Taxed PTE” regime — a Taxed S Corporation or Taxed Partnership pays at the individual rate (4.25% for 2025), giving owners a deduction and working around the federal SALT cap. The election is made annually on the timely-filed return and is irrevocable for that year.

Estimates, Extensions, and Penalties

Individual estimated payments (Form NC-40) are due April 15, June 15, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. A certified federal extension grants an automatic North Carolina extension; otherwise file D-410 (individual), CD-419 (corporate), or D-410P (partnership). Extensions cover filing only — pay at least 90% by the original date to avoid penalty. Failure-to-file runs 5% per month (max 25%); the 2026 interest rate is 7% for the first half of the year.

CPA Action Steps

  • File CD-401S and D-403 in April, not on the federal March date

  • Use the 7-month corporate extension (Nov 16) vs the 6-month partnership extension (Oct 15)

  • Apply 4.25% individual / 2.00% corporate for 2026 — rates change yearly

  • Consider the Taxed PTE election for SALT-cap relief

Verify current rates and dates against the North Carolina Department of Revenue (ncdor.gov) before filing.
